Lanolin is a greasy yellow substance obtained from certain glands of wool-bearing animals, most coming from domestic sheep. Very similar to wax, it is used in anything from skin ointments to water-proofing waxes.
Lanolin is sometimes used in the manufacture of such products as shoe polish partly because of it's waterproofing ability. Lanolin is used in cosmetics and on propellers. It has been used as a lubricant underwater again due to its water repellant properties.
Lanolin is used to soothe skin, by breastfeeding mothers on sore and cracked nipples. It can be used as an ointment to treat chapped lips, diaper rash, dry skin, itchy skin, rough feet, minor cuts, minor burns and skin abrasions. Some shaving creams contain lanolin.
Lanolin has been used for ages by baseball players to help break in their baseball gloves by softening the leather.
