Dry Leather

How to restore dry leather

Leather will naturally dry out just sitting there. If you purchase a new pair of shoes or a leather coat or even a sofa the likelihood of the item having sat in the storeroom or store for several months it quite high. One needs to get the moisture back in the leather. Water will dry the leather as well so washing leather is not always the best but sometimes is necessary to get certain stains and dirt out.

Restoring dry leather is done best with a good leather cream like URAD. There are other two and three step approaches that will clean and condition leather and the key is getting the leather hydrated. That will also help prevent future deteriorization of the leather.

Clean the leather with a cleaner or mild soap and water(not the best) and then use a conditioner. URAD will clean, condition and protect the leather all in one. Once clean if you are using separate conditioner like saddle soap, apply per the instructions. Each product that is available has it own way of applying and small print - read the small print.

There are other products like URAD that are available - many of them have been specifically developed for leather shoes and boots and have a 'waxy' finish that needs buffing. URAD was developed for furniture so there is nothing left on the surface within a minute or so if you apply it correctly.

We have retailers using URAD on a regular basis on leather furniture and often shoes that are on display to keep the leather in good shape and the products looking good. As URAD also protects the leather it helps with all the people 'testing out' the sofas or shoes.

With older items like a super dry leather jacket it may take a few applications to get the moisture back into the leather. With URAD for most items other than footwear every few months is enough but again if the item is very dried out a few applications in the first few weeks will be OK.

With softer leathers you will want to use Tenderly. There is no carnauba wax in Tenderly and thus won't stiffen the leather or give it a super shine where you don't want one. URAD will give more protection such as waterproofing.

When you get a new pair of shoes or leather jacket or sofa, treat right away with URAD. Shoes and boots particularly - if you are wearing them outside you will need to protect them. Do, please, read the instructions so you get it right, though.
